Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys
Greetings AIS Community,
I hope that you are looking as forward to the summer break as I am! I know that it feels as if it is so far away, but in reality time will quickly slip by us and we'll be enjoying our summer adventures again.
As you know, last year we all engaged in a big group read of the book Purple Hibiscus and used that to fuel our focus by looking at multiple perspectives this year. It was such a joy and pleasure to hear you all discussing the book's content and the author's point of view and other aspects that led to enriched conversations. It was also great to see our community come together to learn how to discuss text, engaging in skills that will serve us in our academic careers and beyond.
I was also inspired by the ownership you all took over this project. Some of you joined me in the Summer Workshop days where you were able to change my mind about a few of the characters. Some you even took initiative to suggest changes to the project and we took your advice. You wanted more ownership out of the topic that we chose and so we sought out your advice in what we should read next, so I am proud to announce our focus for the 2017-2018 school year as well as our summer reading project which was chosen by our community by an overwhelming majority.
Next year, we will read Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys. It's about four individuals during World War II and some of their life experiences. Our theme will center around Global Competency #11--Making Healthy Decisions. It's an engaging story that provides food for thought about some of the choices that we make in life, but also how to handle circumstances that are handed to us.
I've reached out to the author, Ms. Sepetys and she's considering visiting our school to do a book talk with us. I'll keep you informed as I hear from her. It wasn't a full out resounding "yes" but it also wasn't a rejection.
In order to assist you in your journey with this novel and project, I've scheduled a few Summer Workshop days. Please feel free to sign up for them if you need assistance or just want a chance to talk about the book itself. If you can't make those days, and would still like to have a discussion, please email me and I'll set up an appointment for you.
I look forward to hearing about your summer adventures, big and small. This summer, I'm headed to Brussels to work and study with the European Union in June. In July, I'll be in Jerusalem working with the museum Yad Vashem. I'm really excited to be going to both of those places and look forward to bringing back my experiences and learning to share with you all. I've spent much of the last few weeks doing some reading and preparing for these trips. If you're interested, I'd be happy to share those resources and readings with you.
As always, I love book suggestions so if you have any please share! I'll be on at least a 15 hour flight to Israel and could use some things to distract me. Plus I really enjoy expanding my world view.
Wishing you a wonderful and restful summer. Please reach out if you need anything.
Cheers,
Ms. W
